Nintendo has announced their successor to the Nintendo DS handheld–and its called the 3DS. It will incorporate 3D graphics and effects without requiring the user to wear glasses.
Giddily sitting on the deets surrounding the DS2 until E3 proved overwhelming for Nintendo, as they chose the poignant date of last night to announce their next handheld system. They did so via a PDF on their Japanese site.
The device, called the 3DS, launches in Japan in about a year (March 2011), but Nintendo have yet to reveal any launch dates outside of their homeland. They do however promise to give more information at the E3 gaming expo in LA this June.
The 3DS be able to play all DSi and DS games and likely have two cameras, but seeing as the GBA port was removed for the DSi, it probably won’t show up on the 3DS either.
The 3DS does not require the player to wear any glasses to see the 3D effects either, so it will likely have a filter built into the screen itself.
The timing of this announcement sure seems odd, seeing as in just 5 days Nintendo launches it next DS in the states, the super-sized DSi XL (known as DSILL in Japan). Consumers considering the DSi XL may just pass on it and hold out for the true successor to the D, not just one with bigger screens.
