Project Dark is now Dark Souls, From Software’s Follow-up to Demon’s Souls

Demon’s Souls, the best video game in the world, was released to a quiet fanfare, slowly building in sales worldwide and eventually landing itself a place amongst the PS3 Greatest Hits. The game’s spiritual successor, code-named Project Dark, was revealed at last year’s TGS, where it was announced that the game would hit both PS3 and Xbox 360. Now Famitsu is releasing more info in the title.

Dark Souls may share a similar name to Demon’s Souls, but From Software says the game’s world and story have no connection to that of Demon’s Souls. Still, they say it will retain the same level of difficulty, meaning you can expect the same sort of trial-and-error progression and brutal boss fights.

Co-op and competitive Online mechanics will also be in play, building off the original online interactions of Demon’s Souls, and character creation will also return, though job classes have been removed.  Also, the game no longer features different stages set inside separated worlds, instead opting for a vast open world for players to explore.

Namco Bandai is publishing the game this year, and will also be bringing the game to Europe and the US.
